PRODUCT DESIGN
Dribbble Academy Course, 2023
Last year I completed Dribbble Academy’s Product Design Course, to advance my expertise in UI/UX and learn best practices from industry experts. As part of this journey, I conducted an in-depth case study for a pet care mobile app I designed, named Handle.
Handle bridges the gap between pet owners and expert caretakers. It addresses the challenges users face, including lack of experience, trust concerns, and pets with special needs. Handle provides a reliable and inclusive environment where every pet receives the specialized care they deserve.

My role as Product Designer was to identify current problems in the existing market and create an experience that addresses the user needs in a thoughtful way.
The Problem
Pet care apps connect owners with local providers, but not all pets fit the standard mold. Some may have health or training needs, requiring experienced specialists for proper care.
Lack of Training
Special Needs
Trust Issues
The Solution
Create an app that offers experienced professionals with backgrounds that include handling, training, and veterinary technician experience. Take into account a pet's special needs and establish trust with pet owners through transparency in a streamlined experience.
Research
Interviews and surveys were conducted with pet owners aged 35 to 60+ in the US, revealing common concerns with the apps they've used. Market research was conducted on two of the most well known pet care apps, Rover and Wag,
“Having a stranger walk your dog is tricky business. If a dog gets loose, it might be difficult to get them back...”
“I’m looking for a sitter with knowledge in what they’re doing, experience and patience...”
“Looking for someone reliable, patient, and willing to use the training method my dog was taught by.”
rover
Option to browse
Enhanced background check
Services through 3rd party partnership
Flow is too convoluted
Design is rudimentary
Sign-up CTA was hidden
wag
Offers “vet chat” and some speciality services
Promos and How-to guide
Design is a little more thought out
Flow is too aggressive, forcing to book
Lack of diversity and skill level in service providers
Design could still use some improvement
User Persona
Cynthia Brown
Law Librarian
“It’s not about money, the priority is finding someone who can take good care of my dog.”
background
Cindy, a Law Librarian, and her husband Dave, without children and dedicated to their dogs, particularly in dog agility for over 10 years, are actively involved in the dog community. They seek a reliable place for boarding and exercising their dogs during emergencies or travels. Despite her knowledge, finding a trustworthy person or facility is challenging for Cindy.
behaviors
- In her 50’s +, married
- Works full-time
- Active in dog community
- Unexpected priorities
motivations
- Have availability for unexpected events
- Wants to travel
- Have more freedom
Goals & Ambitions
- Travel to exotic locations
- Be more spontaneous
- Have availability for her friends and elderly family
frustrations
- Finding a facility with qualified professionals
- Finding someone she can trust
- Doesn’t want her dog around a lot of other dogs
User Flow
The Sign-Up user flow includes filter options with visible CTAs to encourage outreach or booking, emphasizing a smooth flow with easy navigation.
Wireframes
High fidelity wire frames allowed me to execute my ideas and visualize how the app would flow and function. This was a strong starting point that allowed me to further iterate in the following phases.
Mood
The goal of the visual design is to convey an elevated, modern, and warm tone while incorporating an element of fun.
Color Palette
A custom analogous color scheme serves as the foundation for achieving the direction set by the Mood Board. While the primary persona is female, it was important to keep the colors neutral to appeal to a diverse range of users.

Typography
The pairing of Serif and Sans Serif fonts helps establish hierarchy while adding variation and contrast. Buenard represents classic heritage, while Poppins introduces a more casual, retro influence.

Visual Design
This course has provided me with a solid foundation in Product Design and creating successful user experiences. I tackled new tasks and challenges that pushed me outside my comfort zone, resulting in a deeper understanding of design thinking and its impact on improving user experiences and achieving goals. I am eager to take this newfound knowledge and continue developing my skills in this field, excited with the possibilities that lie ahead!
